Juvenile court can become involved in many types of cases involving children, many of which are through the Department of Family and Children’s Services. Additionally, when a juvenile commits a crime, the juvenile court gets involved to intervene and correct the delinquency. Depending on the severity of the crime, the juvenile may be placed in juvenile detention.

Most individuals do not know that a Juvenile Court is very different from courts for adults. Juvenile courts have separate rules and procedures. For example, juveniles are not entitled to a jury trial, but rather are tried before a judge called a bench trial. If a juvenile commits a more violent crime the prosecutor may seek to have the juvenile tried as an adult. Because of the special rules and circumstances surrounding juvenile crimes, it is important to obtain private legal counsel.
